Everywhere you look, AI is the hottest new subject when it comes to the tech industry. There is a lot of buzz on how AI will change how we interact with each other in business, school, social media, etc. Artificial Intelligence has been around in some form or another forever (see timeline here)We’ve seen it in video games like chess, where the game changes strategies based on how the human player moves, as well as with algorithms on the web that try to understand the reason behind a search query as opposed to just the plainly written words. There are autonomous cars, robots that vacuum and avoid obstacles, computer generated artwork and more. All these are examples of Artificial Intelligence at work. AI in its simplest form is human intelligence processes simulated by machines. And, a lot of AI programs focus on speech recognition and natural language processing, enter Chat-GPT.
Chat-GPT is a publicly available AI program written by OpenAI that allows users to ask queries, get answers, ask follow-up questions and have a conversation with the program. Chat-GPT’s natural language processing is so effective, it feels like you’re having an actual dialogue with another person. It’s pretty cool. You can ask it to write emails for you, give a synopses on books or movies, ask questions about music, technology, history, almost anything you can think of. And, when it gives you answers, you can ask it to clarify a point, go in more detail, or explain in a different way. Now, because it’s a machine, it does have limits, and after using it a while, you’ll start to notice them, but overall, it’s a really cool program.
So, when I first heard about this, I wanted to try it out, and because I’m in real estate, I thought I’d see if there are in practical uses when it came to my profession. For the most part, the results produced by Chat-GPT seemed natural, and I would think most people would have trouble deciphering which was written by a human or by the computer. With that in mind, Chat-GPT demonstrates how time can easily be saved when performing standard tasks. As of right now, it’s applications in real estate are minimal, and would be focused on efficiency. In the future, as AI progresses, I could see where large portions of the real estate transaction are handed over to this technology. Processes like scheduling inspections and repairs, coordinating showings, managing offers, and organizing all the paperwork. Who knows, maybe in the future there will be AI chatbots negotiating real estate deals. That would be crazy!
No matter how technologically advanced this process gets, I’m sure there will still be room for the human touch. The human who can empathize with and counsel someone when they’re going through one of the biggest changes in their life, buying or selling a home. Maybe, just maybe technology will actually make it easier for agents to focus on the deeply needed soft skills, while the routine tasks are getting done by machines.
